The 2026 Global Culture Report by O.C. Tanner Institute opens with a clear message: workplace culture is changing, and the most successful organizations are those that lead with purpose, connection, and inspiration.
This year’s findings, based on research from more than 42,000 employees and leaders across industries, reveal encouraging progress. The six core areas of culture, known as Talent Magnets, each improved by 1 to 2 percent over the previous year.
That may sound like a small step, but it represents meaningful change. Organizations are listening more closely to their people. Leaders are showing empathy, recognition is becoming more personal, and wellbeing is viewed as a foundation for success.
Opportunities for Organizations in 2026
The report highlights several focus areas that will help organizations strengthen culture and performance this year:
Build trust through leadership that models openness and accountability.
Strengthen employee wellbeing with mental, emotional, and physical support.
Make recognition a regular practice that connects people to purpose.
Encourage inspiration and creativity across teams.
Foster connection across hybrid, remote, and in-person work.
When these areas are prioritized, organizations see stronger engagement, higher retention, and more meaningful collaboration.
The Six Essential Elements That Define Thriving Workplace Cultures
The O.C. Tanner Institute identifies six elements that consistently shape positive, productive workplaces. They are called Talent Magnets because they attract and retain great people:
1. Purpose – Helping employees see how their work contributes to something meaningful.
2. Opportunity – Giving people the chance to learn, grow, and advance.
3. Success – Creating environments where goals are clear and progress is celebrated.
4. Appreciation – Recognizing effort and value in ways that feel genuine.
5. Wellbeing – Supporting balance and fulfillment inside and outside of work.
6. Leadership – Guiding with empathy, trust, and consistency.
Each element reinforces the others, creating a culture where people feel motivated, supported, and proud to belong.
The Five Behaviors of Employees Who Deliver Great Work
The research also explores what great work looks like and how employees can sustain it. Those who consistently deliver exceptional results share five key behaviors:
1. Curiosity – Asking questions and exploring new possibilities
2. Persistence – Staying committed even when challenges arise
3. Collaboration – Working together and learning from others
4. Empathy – Understanding perspectives and showing care
5. Recognition – Celebrating contributions and building a positive team environment
When leaders model and reward these behaviors, great work becomes part of the culture itself.
Every action that supports purpose, growth, and appreciation strengthens workplace culture. Progress may be gradual, but it is powerful. When people feel trusted, supported, and inspired, they create better work and stronger organizations.
